From Myanmar to Melbourne: Lei Yee’s Story of Finding Balance at UniLodge

UniLodge Lincoln House

Moving countries is a big step - one filled with new experiences, challenges, and plenty of learning. For Lei Yee Wint, a Master of Public Health student from Myanmar, living at UniLodge Lincoln House became a crucial part of finding her footing in a new city.
In her own words, here’s how she’s built a life (and a community) in Melbourne.

Why UniLodge Felt Right
“When I was looking for student accommodation, UniLodge stood out because of how convenient everything was,” Lei Yee explains.
“It's just a 5–10 minute walk to my university, and it’s right by the Carlton Gardens - I love walking there to take a break from studying. Plus, it’s close to the CBD and Asian grocery stores, which really makes life easier as a student.”

From day one, her new home didn’t disappoint. Lei Yee landed a room on Level 12 with a stunning city view - something she cherishes every day.
“I can see the blue sky from my window, and at night, the city lights are beautiful. I’ll often make a cup of tea, put on some Ghibli music, and just unwind. It helps soothe my stress and resets my mood for the next day.”

From Loneliness to Belonging
The early months weren’t without their challenges.
“After about six months in Australia, I started to feel homesick. I stayed in my room a lot and didn’t talk to many people - and that just made me feel worse.”
But things began to shift when Lei Yee made a conscious effort to change her routine.
“I started spending more time in the common areas and tried to chat with other students. That helped a lot. I met some amazing people, and now I have real friendships I wouldn’t have made if I hadn’t been living at UniLodge.”
Joining UniLodge’s Res Life events also gave her a chance to learn more about Australian culture and explore more of Melbourne in a fun, relaxed way.

Weather Shock - and Adapting to It
Like many international students, Lei Yee faced a major adjustment when it came to the weather.
“Back home in Myanmar, it’s tropical - about 33°C most of the time. When I arrived in Melbourne, it was winter and around 10°C. The cold and wind were a real shock to the system!”
But with time, warm layers, and a little patience, she adapted - and now she’s got the right blend of comfort and routine.

A Word of Advice
When asked what she’d say to new residents preparing for their own UniLodge journey, Lei Yee shares something simple but meaningful:
“Life is short - enjoy the moment and have fun. Make the most of your student life.”
Her practical tip? “Before you choose any accommodation, make sure safety and accessibility are top of your list.”

Her Favourite Spots
Lei Yee has a soft spot for the Level 12 kitchenette - the same floor as her room - where she studies most days. She also loves using the gym to clear her mind and de-stress after a long day.
And when she needs a caffeine boost?
“There’s this little café on Lygon Street called The Good Measure. I’m not even a coffee lover, but their coffee is the best I’ve had! There’s always a queue, but it’s worth the wait.”

Final Thoughts
For Lei Yee, UniLodge Lincoln House has been more than a place to sleep - it’s helped her build a life in Melbourne. From learning how to connect with others to appreciating quiet moments with a view, her journey is a reminder that home is something we build with time, effort, and a little courage.
