| Swine Flu – caring for our students |
| With the threat of Swine Flu into Australia, UniLodge head office, enhanced our Pandemic Emergency Plan in April and rolled out a more comprehensive policy across the group. Across all properties we have implemented stage one of the plan which is especially about delivering frequent, pro-active communications. We are focused on all the steps students should be taking to avoid being contaminated (such as washing their hands frequently), all emergency contacts are listed such as the closet doctor and the symptoms are outlined. We are using multiple distributions such as posters, student emails and student newsletters for maximum effectiveness. |
 |
| Further to this here is an article from UniLodge @ ANU‘s GM, Peter Warrington.
“We are genuinely concerned for the well being of our staff and residents so we have
established two free sanitary stations around our Reception area. We encourage all to clean their hands with Sanitizer and grab a few tissues on their way past – every time”.

| Community Spirit supporting policies
|
| We thought it timely to reminder you that as part of our Community Spirit program we have a range of supporting policies. These include, as examples, Buddy Program, Integration and Multicultural Policy (not only student events and activities) which help and support cross-cultural understanding and tolerance. |
 |
Our multicultural vision is to build a culture of mutual respect, tolerance and celebration of diversity. We aim to provide opportunity for the building of cross-cultural understanding and friendship.
So, everyone:
• Feels respected
• Looks out for everyone else
• Belongs and shares a sense of family, friendship and belonging
• Interacts with, learns from, and values - all peoples

| Security at our properties |
| While the many UniLodge properties differ in terms of the finer aspects of security and safety – one thing is common and that is, all properties offer a high level of security and safety. The properties offer (or a mixture of) video surveillance, night Security Patrols by specialists, swipe card secure access at the entry, lifts and apartments. We also have in place a Buddy Program, whereby students are paired up, and asked to keep an eye out for each other. We have either Caretakers or UniLodge management who live on site or RA‘s – RA’s are our Resident Advisors, students who have taken on this leadership role. The RA‘s are the residents first point of call after hours and help with such things as lockouts, fire, health issues and they act as a student liaison and management liaison. We thought we would introduce you to one of our RA‘s from UniLodge on Swanston, in the next article. |
 |
| Let‘s meet an RA |
| “I am Alam Singh, I became a member of the UniLodge family in 2006 when I moved into UniLodge on Swanston and ever since I can‘t think of moving out. The location, security and the warmness doesn‘t let me go anywhere. I came to Australia to pursue my Bachelors in Information Technology, at RMIT University. I have now finished that and am continuing into Masters of Computing.
|
 |
| Besides studying, I also became a part of the UniLodge work force when I joined as a Residential Advisor in 2007. This was my first job here and I could not have asked for a better start. As an international student it makes me feel good to be helping out the new ones so that they don‘t have to go through the problems I had to go through or find things out the hard way. |
 |
| Apart from the work at UniLodge I am also a tutor at the RMIT in Computer Science. I have been teaching there since 2008, being on the other side of the team is a lot of fun. |
 |
| In 2008, I was a part of the RMIT Deloitte Innovation winning team, the project focused on the environment and sustainability. We focused on the upcoming environment industry. This year I am going on holiday to the UK. This holiday is a travel prize I won from my OE Australia. Have a look at my winning entry on YouTube. LINK : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivOXnicSrXM |

| UniLodge Sydney – a great place to stay
|
| • United for Community Action |
| On Thursday the 28th of May, UniLodge Sydney staff and students joined together to be part of one of the Cancer Council‘s leading fundraising events, Australia‘s Biggest Morning Tea. The event is the largest and most successful of its kind nationally and we couldn‘t wait to make 2009 our first year on board! With kettles and cups packed onto every available table in our lobby area, the aroma of coffee and cookies soon enticed a mass gathering of residents to enjoy a chat and cuppa for a great cause. All contributions have been put towards the Cancer Council‘s work in research, prevention, education and support… an effort we can all be proud of! |
