Community Spirit |
| This is our third and final article on our student life program – Community Spirit. But we will be showing you Community Spirit in action from here on in! You may remember we outlined the program’s goals in the last edition. |
| We have created a range of activities and an operational platform to ensure we achieve those goals. Some activities have a single focus and other activities work to achieve several of our goals simultaneously. Activities include those that provide an Australian experience such as local tours and barbeques, other activities are educational such as talks on Money Management or Coping With Living Away From Home. Other activities focus on improving English, entertainment, friendship, and therefore support student integration. |
| The correct balance of activities is important and we work to provide a supportive operational framework that incorporates training and policy. For example, one of our supporting policies is about integration. Our Chief Operating Officer Eleanor Davidson commented “Our residents are at a very special stage in their lives. We want to create communities that contribute to growth and maturity. Being able to mix with and make friends with various people from such diverse backgrounds, helps students to gain appreciation about global diversity – its challenges, its benefits”. |
| The Community Spirit program will be fully implemented across all UniLodge properties from 2009! |

A visit to UniLodge @ ANU |
| Wow - visiting our Canberra properties was a pretty amazing experience. My visit coincided with the ANU Open Day and the first sneak preview of the new ANU 2 apartments – they are fantastic! First, I think our General Manager Peter Warrington made me walk about 20 kilometres around the enormous campus of the Australia National University – all in the name of looking for great “video” locations. What was the purpose of the visit? Well, I wanted to get as much great material as I could to produce our next new brochure AND for our new Your Journey, Your Place video. Check it out (the video) it really shows Community Spirit in action and the residents really enjoyed the experience of being “movie stars”. Peter also showed me their new UniLodge Uncut student newsletter, it was six pages long, full of all the upcoming activities that students were doing, such as the veggie news updates (veggie garden), to Netball Team highlights, to the next free barbeque. Thank you UniLodge @ ANU for showing me exactly how well we do it! |

Other snip bits |
| UniLodge @ ANU student art |
| Engaging students and creating that sense of “community” is a priority for UniLodge. GM Peter Warrington commented on a recent student activity, “Several of the ground level surrounding walls were artistically enhanced with original student/resident character and design. A number of styles and designs were selected. The residents do love the added colour and youthful appearance compared to the once grey and plain walls of the past”. |
| |
| On Flinders new signage |
| UniLodge on Flinders first opened its doors on 5th July 1999. GM Osman Duman said, “In our 10th year we have given the exterior of our building a mini-facelift with new signage”. On Flinders is planning other birthday activities on their actual birthday, next year – including fun ones! |
| |
| Developments at Swinburne Place |
| This great property on campus at Swinburne University has installed a new lawn, one would never guess that it’s synthetic and it’s helping save our precious water. Another recent touch was the new external light-boxes. |
